A custom mouth guard is made to fit your teeth and bite for a specific purpose. Oak Hill Family Dentistry provides guards for sports protection and for selected patients who grind or clench their teeth. These appliances are different and should not be used interchangeably.
Sports Mouth Guards
A sports guard cushions the teeth and soft tissues during activities with a risk of falls, collisions, or objects striking the mouth. It may reduce dental injuries such as chipped, displaced, or knocked-out teeth. A mouth guard does not eliminate injury risk or prevent concussions.
Night Guards for Grinding and Clenching
A night guard creates a barrier between the upper and lower teeth. When appropriate, it can reduce wear and help protect natural teeth and restorations from grinding forces. It does not stop every clenching habit or treat all causes of jaw pain, headaches, or tooth sensitivity, so an examination is important first.
Not the Same as a Sleep-Apnea Appliance
A routine sports or grinding guard is not an oral appliance prescribed for obstructive sleep apnea. Loud snoring, gasping, witnessed breathing pauses, or significant daytime sleepiness should be discussed with a medical professional. Sleep-apnea treatment requires proper diagnosis and coordination.
What the Visit Involves
- We examine your teeth, gums, bite, restorations, symptoms, and intended use.
- Digital scans or impressions are taken when a custom guard is appropriate.
- The finished appliance is checked for fit, retention, bite, comfort, breathing, and speech.
- Bring the guard to future dental visits so wear and fit can be monitored.
Care and Replacement
- Rinse after use and clean with a soft brush and recommended cleanser.
- Store it dry in a ventilated case and keep it away from heat and pets.
- Do not use hot water, which can distort some materials.
- Call if the guard cracks, develops sharp edges, becomes loose, or stops fitting after dental work or tooth movement.
